Wilder Memorial Library

Position Posting:  Library Director 

 

The Position

The Wilder Memorial Library is seeking a dynamic, curious, creative, community-oriented, and mission-driven individual, a self-starter who believes in the power of libraries to transform both communities and individuals. As Director, this person will guide the Library into an exciting future, which may include expansion of the physical plant. Our goal is for the Library to be a key hub in our community, providing a warm, welcoming and stimulating environment for all ages. 

 

With the guidance of the Board of Trustees, the Library Director plans, administers, and oversees all aspects of library functions, including but not limited to purchasing and cataloging the Library’s collection, supervising employees and volunteers, providing programming and other services, writing necessary reports and grant applications, and interacting with the Vermont Department of Libraries. The Director also oversees the daily operations of the facility, including maintenance and repairs. 

 

Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree is required, ideally in Library Science or in a related field, although applicable work experience will be considered. The successful candidate will be encouraged to work toward a Vermont Public Library certification and be willing to pursue continuing education to stay current in library science. 

 

Management and supervisory experience is required, as is proficiency with technology and computer skills (such as website management and knowledge of social media).  Excellent communication skills are necessary, and knowledge of grant writing would be ideal. Fundraising experience and financial management skills are also desirable.  In addition to possessing organizational and critical thinking skills, the right person will be committed to becoming a spokesperson for the Library, engaging the public in a positive manner and able to think creatively to identify and answer the needs of the library and the community.  Ideally, the Director will have a thorough working knowledge of modern library policies, practices, technologies and trends. The person will live in or have personal knowledge of the Weston area and a willingness to embrace the community. And, of course, the successful candidate must love reading and will ideally have a wide knowledge of books and authors. 

 

Physical demands include being required to walk, use stairs, sit, talk, hear and carry books up to 30 pounds. 

 

Hours and Salary

The position is for 20+ hours per week, including Saturday hours and some evenings, with a competitive salary commensurate with experience. Benefits include time off for vacation and personal time. 

 

About the Library

The village of Weston has 550 residents and a large second home population. The Library has about 550 patrons, a number which fluctuates between seasons. The Library collection includes about 5,000 items.  The Library currently does not have bathroom facilities on site nor ADA accessibility.
